OmniOS

OmniOS is an open-source, Unix-like operating system derived from illumos, the open-source successor to OpenSolaris. It is designed for enterprise server environments, offering features such as the ZFS file system, DTrace for dynamic tracing, Crossbow for network virtualization, and support for both hardware virtualization (via bhyve and KVM) and lightweight OS virtualization through zones.

The system is self-hosting and maintained on GitHub, with all development conducted openly, allowing anyone to access the source code and build OmniOS themselves. Commercial support packages are also available, providing custom assistance and direct access to the developers.

OmniOS is particularly well-suited as a virtualization platform, supporting both lightweight OS virtualization and full hardware virtualization using zones. A zone is a virtualized instance of OmniOS that behaves like a separate system while operating alongside other zones on the same machine. System resources can be shared and managed across zones using various techniques.

The OmniOS Community Edition Association, a Swiss association, is dedicated to the continued support and release of OmniOS for the benefit of all involved parties. The board controls access to the OmniOS Certificate Authority, with current members including Tobias Oetiker (President), Andy Fiddaman (Development), and Dominik Hassler (Treasurer).

In summary, OmniOS is a robust, open-source operating system tailored for enterprise server use, offering advanced features and a supportive community for development and deployment.
